What is the Cartesian "Solution"?
René Descartes posited that the mind (soul) of man was distinct from
his body with limited interaction or communication, a concept known
as Cartesian Dualism. While he later clarified that there was
a "union
of the mind and the body...known very clearly through the senses"
in a letter to Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia (circa 1643), his original
published works are mirrored by health care systems worldwide.
Descartes's "mind/body separation" parallels the clinical
and administrative processes which encourage the dis-integration
of psychiatric (mind) and physical (body) services and service support
with independent
practitioners in disparate locations, supported by autonomous and
competing, payment pools. The Cartesian "Solution" draws on the unpublished,
and often unrecognized, clarification by Descartes, which acknowledges
the union of the body and mind and recognizes the important interaction
between the two.
